EARTH HEROES: Champions of the Wilderness
by Bruse and Carol L. Malnor

I'm not quite finished reading the book, as life gets in the way of relaxing sometimes.  However, it seemed timely to include this review with the publication of the Observer about Sustainability in Society.  This edition in the Earth Heroes series focuses on eight individuals whose lifestyles and passion for nature brought about change in society.

The book spans 200 years, from Henry David Thoreau, the pioneer of living with the land despite society's rapid change away from that lifestyle, up through modern, still living, activists, David Suzuki and Wangari Maathai, who challenge current fossil fuel use and the development of wild areas.  Each story gives an overview of the persons' life: childhood influences, challenges through adulthood and major accomplishments.  There is also a timeline for each person.  These would be a great tool for students looking to write biographies on people who continue to influence and change the world.

Additionally, the last 2 pages are a guide to be an Earth Hero yourself!  There are some tips about exploring the wilderness in various ways, bringing nature into your home, involving family and friends in this new relationship, and sources of inspiration.

The Earth Heroes series is published by Dawn Publications.
